ZeptoMail becomes Zoho CPaaS, adding SMS, WhatsApp and voice

Zoho has renamed ZeptoMail as Zoho CPaaS and added SMS, WhatsApp and voice alongside its transactional email service. CPaaS stands for communication platform as a service, which is the category Twilio, Sinch and Infobip already sell into.

ZeptoMail was built for transactional mail only: password resets, receipts, order and shipping notices, one-time codes. That narrow focus was its deliverability pitch. Marketing mail stayed off its IPs. The new channels are pitched at the same kind of traffic, with SMS for codes and alerts, WhatsApp for order updates from a verified sender, and voice for confirmations and reminders.

Each channel has its own API. They share one console, one set of analytics and compliance controls, and a credit-based pricing model.

Existing customers have nothing to do. Zoho says SMTP credentials, API tokens, sending domains, Agents and suppression lists carry over, and the product page says no reconfiguration is needed. The new channels can be switched on from the same console. The name in the console and documentation will change over the coming weeks. For postmasters, the abuse page still lists zeptomail.net as the sending domain. The name has changed. The mail looks the same.

Zoho says the new channels inherit the work already done on email: sender reputation, suppression enforcement, bounce handling and SPF, DKIM and DMARC. How well that translates will depend on the channel. SMS and WhatsApp carry their own registration and template rules, and a good email reputation earns nothing with a carrier.

The company also has an eye on AI. It says it has no plans to build agents or an orchestration layer, and wants Zoho CPaaS to be the platform that agents use to send messages. Zoho describes the four channels as the foundation, with more channels and deeper features to follow.

The test for email customers is whether the transactional discipline survives the move. A platform that keeps marketing traffic away from receipts has an easier deliverability story than one that tries to carry everything.
