Yahoo Mail slashes free storage from 1 TB to 20 GB

Yahoo quietly reduced its free Yahoo Mail storage allowance from 1 TB to 20 GB, with Yahoo Mail Plus subscribers dropping from 5 TB to 200 GB. According to ZeroBounce, the change takes effect by Aug 27 2025 and represents a 98 % reduction as reported by zerobounce.net.

BitRecover confirmed that Yahoo began enforcing the new 20 GB cap on July 29 2025 and noted that users must upgrade to paid plans (100 GB or 1 TB) or Yahoo Mail Plus (200 GB) to maintain larger mailboxes.

Yahoo’s own help page now lists “20 GB of free storage” and states that users will receive notice before any sending/receiving restrictions are applied; a 30‑day grace period will be provided after a mailbox exceeds its limit help.yahoo.com. The help page emphasises that Yahoo Mail Plus offers 200 GB and that additional 100 GB and 1 TB storage plans are available.

Why it matters:

  • Soft‑bounce risk: A sudden 98 % storage reduction means many Yahoo mailboxes will reach quota quickly. Emails sent to full mailboxes will soft‑bounce, increasing bounce rates and harming sender reputation.
  • List hygiene: Senders should monitor bounce responses such as mailbox_quota_exceeded and temporarily suppress addresses until recipients clear space.
  • User communication: Marketers may need to notify subscribers using Yahoo addresses about the change to encourage them to free up space or update their contact information.

Compliance / action checklist:

  • Use list‑validation tools to identify Yahoo recipients with mailbox_quota_exceeded status and suppress them from campaigns until their storage is cleared.
  • Proactively segment Yahoo addresses and monitor bounce codes to maintain deliverability; remove dormant or inactive addresses to improve engagement.
  • Update bounce‑handling logic to distinguish temporary quota‑related bounces from permanent failures.
  • Communicate with Yahoo subscribers about the change and encourage them to free space or upgrade.
  • Ensure that suppressed Yahoo addresses remain on suppression lists to comply with CAN‑SPAM and GDPR.
