Yahoo Mail is preparing another reduction to free mailbox storage, and this one is more restrictive than before. Although according to reports it is not impacting users in North America. This does impact according our sources Europe, the UK and potentially other geo locations.
In a notice sent to users, Yahoo announced it will cap free mail storage at 15GB starting May 5, 2026. North American and some other accounts appear to continue to enjoy 20GB of storage space. Accounts that exceed the limit will be blocked from sending or receiving email until users delete messages or pay for more storage.
It’s another step down from Yahoo’s previous allowances, and a clear signal that inbox providers are getting tougher about unused, overloaded mailboxes.
What’s Changing
Here’s what Yahoo is rolling out:
- New storage limit: 15GB
- Effective date: May 5, 2026
- Enforcement: Email sending and receiving will stop once the limit is exceeded
- User options: Delete mail or purchase additional storage
Yahoo frames the change as part of broader inbox improvements focused on productivity and management.
Why This Matters to readers of emailexpert
Yahoo inboxes used to be difficult to fill. That’s no longer true.
A 15GB cap significantly increases the chances of quota-exceeded bounces, especially for long-standing Yahoo accounts that users treat as archives rather than active inboxes.
For senders, that means:
- More soft bounces from Yahoo domains
- Increased risk in continuing to mail low-engagement Yahoo addresses
- Faster reputation damage if bouncing addresses aren’t suppressed
This is particularly risky for legacy lists, where Yahoo addresses may appear valid but are no longer reachable in practice.
What to Watch Now
As May 2026 approaches, expect a noticeable uptick in Yahoo-related bounce activity tied to full inboxes. Email teams should start preparing now by:
- Reviewing Yahoo segments for recent engagement
- Tightening bounce handling and suppression rules
- Accelerating list hygiene on older or dormant data
Yahoo’s move to a 15GB mailbox limit is another sign that inbox providers are becoming far less tolerant of passive email accumulation.
