SendGrid template chaos for some marketers

SendGrid Experiences Multiple Short-Lived Incidents

Email service provider SendGrid, a subsidiary of Twilio, experienced several minor system issues in mid-September, though none led to a widespread, long-term disruption of core email delivery. The incidents, which were quickly investigated and resolved, highlight the importance of maintaining independent backups of critical marketing assets.

The Template Issue

On September 18, an issue affecting dynamic templates in the SendGrid user interface led to some customers seeing incorrect version names/previews and, in a few cases, the unexpected deletion of template versions. The problem was not a “critical system failure” and did not affect the actual sending of emails. SendGrid’s engineering team identified and resolved the issue within a few hours.

Other Recent Incidents

The template issue followed two other, separate incidents earlier in the week:

  • Scheduled Sends: On September 15, some customers experienced failures when trying to create or update scheduled email sends.
  • Billing Portal: Also on September 15, customers faced difficulties updating payment methods in the billing portal.

All of these issues were resolved in a matter of hours, with updates provided on the company’s official status page. There is no evidence of a global, week-long system failure that brought marketing operations to a standstill.

Customer Recommendations

While the incidents were minor, they serve as a reminder for businesses that rely on cloud services to have redundancy and backup plans in place. SendGrid’s own documentation recommends that customers regularly export their templates and store them in external repositories to prevent data loss.
