MessageBird, a provider of omnichannel communications solutions, has announced major restructuring – with the unfortunate news that around 31% of its employees are being laid off. In a blog post and email to employees, CEO Robert Vis accepted responsibility for growing headcount too quickly and not integrating acquisitions effectively enough.

The news will have a huge impact on the industry, and our thoughts go out to those impacted. Here are some key points from MessageBird’s announcement

  • Despite generating a profit in 2021 and 2022 the CEO has decided to cut staff dramatically
  • CEO Robert Vis accepted responsibility for growing headcount too quickly
  • Around 31% of employees are being laid off
  • MessageBird is taking steps to integrate acquisitions more effectively going forward

MessageBird is the company that recently acquired SparkPost and the shocking announcement means many highly respected figures in the industry, senior figures that have been with SparkPost before it was SparkPost and MessageSystems before it was a company are now on the market.

Robert Vis the MessageBird CEO stated on their blog post announcing the layoffs “We bootstrapped MessageBird profitably for the first 6 years, spent the next 5 years investing and made the company profitable again late 2021. While we continue to operate profitably in 2022 and sustain our growth rates ahead of our peers, unfortunately we still need to take more drastic measures for the health of our business and to continue to support and prepare our customers and our stakeholders from what is about to come.”
