Google is rolling out AI Overviews in Gmail search to more business and education users, allowing people to ask natural language questions in the Gmail search bar and receive concise AI-generated answers drawn from relevant email threads.
Announced on 22 April 2026, the feature is designed to reduce the time spent digging through fragmented conversations and search results. Instead of relying on keyword searches, users can ask questions such as which invoices are outstanding, what milestones were agreed for a project, or what comments were made on a shared deck.
Google says the tool can pull context from multiple conversations and return a summary directly inside Gmail search. The feature had previously been available to users with Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions, but is now being expanded to eligible Google Workspace business and education customers.
The rollout applies to both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, beginning 22 April 2026, with visibility potentially taking longer than 15 days.
AI Overviews in Gmail search will be available to Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Frontline Plus, and Google AI Pro for Education users, as well as consumers on Google AI Pro and Ultra plans.
For administrators, the feature is enabled by default where Gemini for Workspace in Gmail and Workspace Intelligence access to Gmail are enabled. End users must also have both Gmail smart features and Google Workspace smart features switched on.
For email professionals, the update is another sign of how major mailbox providers are embedding generative AI directly into everyday inbox workflows. Search is moving beyond retrieval and into interpretation, summarisation and task support, a shift likely to shape user expectations across both consumer and business email environments.
