Thids past week in Australia, ANZ has come under fire after an internal email automation error prematurely told staff they had been terminated, sparking public outrage, union condemnation, and an internal investigation into how the messages were sent on Wednesday, August 27th.
ANZ sent emails, before any formal conversations had even taken place! The messages, which even instructed employees to return company laptops, have triggered public outcry, union criticism, and an internal investigation.
While ANZ has since apologised, halted the rogue workflow, and personally contacted affected employees, the reputational damage is done. Australia’s financial union condemned the incident as “demeaning” and “unacceptable,” highlighting not just a technological misstep, but a fundamental failure in respecting employee dignity.
