Mailchimp began in Atlanta in 2001 as a side project of a web design agency. Ben Chestnut and Dan Kurzius ran it as a bootstrapped business, with no outside investment, until the sale to Intuit.
The platform covers email campaigns, automated customer journeys, audience management and segmentation, forms and landing pages, reporting and generative AI tools for drafting content. SMS marketing is a paid add-on available in a limited set of countries. Transactional email is sold separately as Mailchimp Transactional, the service formerly known as Mandrill. Integrations include Intuit's QuickBooks, Shopify and WooCommerce.
MCP account operations apply to Transactional Messaging. Restricted API keys must have the AI Agents group enabled and permit the requested calls.
