AWS Accidentally Sends Layoff Email Before Official Announcement

Amazon Web Services (AWS) mistakenly alerted employees to upcoming layoffs before the company was ready to go public, exposing the risks of poorly controlled internal communications.

On January 27, 2026, Amazon Web Services (AWS) accidentally sent an internal email revealing details of planned layoffs ahead of the official announcement. The message, written by a senior AWS executive, referenced “Project Dawn,” the internal code name for the restructuring effort, and implied that employees in the U.S., Canada, and Costa Rica had already been affected.

Although a related calendar invite was quickly canceled, the damage was done. The email had already spread internally and soon began circulating on Slack and social media, accelerating external awareness. Unlike previous Amazon workforce reductions coordinated centrally, these layoffs are being managed directly by AWS.

Scale of the layoffs

The cuts are expected to affect around 16,000 corporate employees. When combined with layoffs announced in October 2025, impacting roughly 14,000 roles, the total reaches nearly 30,000 positions, or close to 10% of Amazon’s corporate workforce.

Lessons for communication professionals

While this incident involves an internal email, the implications extend far beyond AWS:

  • Decentralised sending increases risk
When business units control their own email workflows, strong central approval and timing controls are essential.
  • Premature sends have real consequences
Early disclosure of job cuts creates unnecessary anxiety, damages morale, and almost guarantees leaks.
  • Automation still needs human oversight
Calendar invites and draft emails should never act as placeholders for sensitive content. One accidental click can override embargoes instantly.
  • “Internal” no longer exists
In a world of instant messaging and screenshots, every internal message should be written as if it could become public within minutes.

Amazon’s response

Amazon confirmed that the layoffs are part of a broader restructuring aimed at “reducing layers, increasing ownership, and removing bureaucracy.” Affected employees will receive transition support, including a 90-day period to apply for internal roles, along with severance packages for those exiting the company.

The AWS email misfire is a clear reminder that internal communications demand the same discipline as external ones. Without robust approval workflows and safeguards, even a single mistake can quickly become a public and costly incident.
