AWeber Chooses KumoMTA for Transparent, Scalable Email Delivery

AWeber, a leader in the email marketing space, serving over one million entrepreneurs and small businesses since 1998, has successfully migrated its email delivery infrastructure to KumoMTA, the open-source, high-performance mail transfer agent (MTA) designed for today’s large-scale senders.

After years of relying on the Momentum MTA, AWeber faced increasing challenges as engineering support declined following the vendor’s acquisition. In addition, architectural limitations and growing concerns around vendor competition made a new approach essential.

“Ultimately, it kind of boils down to transparency,” said Gavin Roy, Technical Lead at AWeber. “MTAs like Momentum take a black-box approach. When a new version got released, we’d have little to no visibility into what changed. With KumoMTA’s open-source model, we could see the new elements as code that had been rolled into the release. As such, we could test it internally before we graduated it to production.”

KumoMTA addressed AWeber’s most pressing needs with:

  • Greater Transparency – Open-source development provided full visibility and control over release changes.
  • Modern Architecture – Flexible deployment models, container compatibility, and scalable infrastructure.
  • Reduced Risk – No vendor lock-in and no funding of a potential competitor.
  • Collaborative Support – Direct communication with the KumoMTA engineering team via Slack and GitHub.

“The most immediate benefit was unprecedented visibility into our email infrastructure,” added Roy. “This transparency dramatically accelerated our testing and deployment cycles.”

With KumoMTA, AWeber now has a foundation for future growth, including the ability to scale infrastructure and integrate real-time event data seamlessly into its systems.
